A European university alliance for health and care
EduCare 5.0 is a European University Alliance of ten universities and higher education institutions from nine countries: Austria, Czechia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain. The alliance is coordinated by Hochschule Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSBI) in Germany, one of its founding members.
Students, researchers, teachers and practice partners work together across national and disciplinary borders to develop new approaches to healthcare and people’s wellbeing in Europe. The focus is on health, digitalisation, sustainability and social participation.
What 5.0 means
The name EduCare 5.0 combines the terms Education and (Health)Care, the thematic focus of the alliance. The number 5.0 refers to the transformation of European organisations from 4.0, focused heavily on digitalisation and technology, to 5.0, which stands for sustainable, resilient and human-centred approaches.

The alliance’s biannual conference is hosted by the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iași. The date was confirmed at the alliance’s working meeting in Lisbon in April 2026.

At its fourth working meeting the alliance defined the EduCare 5.0 Capacity Building through to 2028 action plan, a four-level model to increase departmental engagement, generate a continuous flow of proposals and strengthen the alliance from within. The partners also planned a pre-award support service, new Blended Intensive Programmes for academic and professional services staff and mentoring programmes across the network.
Research Management programme for staff

The HSBI Research Academy hosted an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme on research management for staff of the member institutions, with 28 participants from ten partners in nine countries. Staff programmes of this kind are part of the capacity-building plan the alliance agreed in Lisbon.
